My creative space... an update

It seems its where you live... A little while ago I posted about my Spotlight woes after an incident involving a staff member there I like to call Bev and her thoughts on red. There were some lovely supportive responses, particularly from Vic, who I wish was with me at the time, and Sue who pointed out the store classing system. Nikki directed me back to Vic's post about red love. I mean really, Red is most certainly a colour much loved by so many bloggers and fashionistas I can think of... Quilt project anyone?

So anyway, we were in Melbourne and I had reason to go to Spotlight. I tried the local Brunswick store which, on a Saturday morning is just plain awful. Not sure if they had what I wanted cos most stock was on the floor. There was no-one to ask for help either, just 25 people waiting for service and two frantic women serving them... so I left. "That's it!!" I said to Huz on returning to the little red car, "We have to go to WORLD OF SPOTLIGHT!" Thats our special name for the South Melbourne store. Its right opposite head office, so you can generally find what you are after, and then some. They have enough staff to help, not so many customers, and registers that you wander through like a supermarket. No queues, no big tables or numbers or confusion. Its clinical, sure, but come on, this is Spotlight on a saturday morning, people. The day before a market. I'm in a hurry and I'm guilty enough of not supporting my local community... So I rush in and find what I'm after, then say to Huz "just a minute, I'm going to check the red buttons"... and there they are. A selection of red buttons larger than I've seen elsewhere and not just that, they had the ones I particularly wanted!! So I bought them all. I now have 14 red fabric buttons in my creative space for cherry onesies.. and maybe something else. And the red love can continue here again.

I'll also be unpacking, taking stock and preparing for the next round of market fever. I think I may need to take a reserved approach to the market thing next year, but that's another post all together.

Go see some lovely creative spaces at Kirsty's. I have so much catching up to do - I'm really looking forward to it!!

  1. What a happy ending for you and the red buttons!
That spotlight sounds amazing. I'm well over waiting in line with 25 other people where there are 2 people serving... How can they think that's a good system?

  2. Yay for red buttons! That original spotlight lady just had no idea, next time she needs to know what’s cool she need only check in bloggland – we know what’s hot.

  6. Oh. Yeah.

    That's what I'm talking about!!!

I have been to Sth Melb spotlight a couple of times, it is a bit weird - you are right - almost clinical, nary a customer in sight but many ailes of well stocked crafty goodness!

(And just so you know, I freaked the hell out when I saw your first picture - red & buttons...?! Be still my beating heart!)

  8. Well I wish we all had a Spotlight like that one near us. I popped into mine this morning and bought some Emily Bloom fat quarters and they even had bolts of fabric to match them too. How wonderful and not even expensive! I am glad you got your red buttons, it was obviously meant to be be wasnt it. Who doesnt like red as a color (ooh wait my mum doesnt like it much but I am trying to convert her) lol!!!

  9. Oh those buttons are just divine! They look like the ones you find on vintage 60s frocks, don't they? Just love them. K

  15. I'm not sure it's just where you live. I was inspired to make a voodoo pincushion using inkjet fabric and which may or may not have been inspired by a Spotlight logo. I can't rave enough about its therapeutic values.

Glad to hear Spotty came through in the end!

  16. As an ex-spotlight worker I agree about all your spotlight angst. South melb is a faux-store, it's very exsistence enrages ordinary spotlight store workers. While sth melb workers have it cruisy the ordinary workers are near suicidal with the lack of stock/staff.
    Hooray for finding your buttons!!

  17. a) Lauren I really wanted to get along to meet you at Matilda's! But as it happened my OWN tassie rels were up for the weekend to celebrate a significant birthday so there was no market-going to be had. Dang.
    b) I had NO IDEA that there was a decent Spotty in Sth Melb. As you identified, my local (Brunswick) is dire. Worst store ever.
    c) Cool to see that you're stocking some stuff at Wilderness shop. Now that I will definitely be able to visit next year when down. And I will stalk you in Tassie, oh yes...

  18. I am so glad the red love can continue Lauren... not that I thought it had stopped, maybe just stalled a little!
